What made you start Sunshine Sundries & Gifts?

In a time long ago, when I was just a young lass of 12, I wanted to own my own business so I could spend time with my own children (when I had them, that is) and I wouldn’t be under someone’s “thumb” and have to ask their permission to take a day off like my parents had to do. I knew owning your own business was hard work, but even at that young age I knew that it would be worth it.

In 1995, I purchased my first soaping/home spa product books and was hooked! I have always had sensitive skin, and knowing what went into my products was a wonderfully empowering experience! I’ve been studying soaping, oil properties, essential oils, aromatherapy/aromachology, and anything else related to personal health and emotional well being.

In 1998, I started my own “business” with a major cosmetic distributor and I hated it! It wasn’t my own business. I was making more money for the company by purchasing catalogs and samples, plus selling THEIR product! I quit doing that only to start a few years later with a major candle distributor making the same claims as the cosmetic one did, only in different words and with different “promotion levels”. I was with the candle company about the same time that “Lead wicks are bad!” and “Candles = Mass amounts of soot!” came into knowledge. That is when I started researching something I heard about on the Internet, soy candles. In 2000, I started my extensive research on soy candles. What would it cost to purchase them wholesale and then market them myself? Could I just make them myself? I decided after looking into the wholesale resale market versus the industry wholesale supply market that I would get some samples and see if I could do it. And I LOVED IT!! I call it “My Therapy”. For me, it is one of the most relaxing things to do. I turn up my music and let ‘er pour! It didn’t take me long to realize that my spa products and Cold Process soap would go really well with the candles to give as gifts – to friends, family, co-workers, and most important to one’s self! In June 2004, I officially started Sunshine Sundries & Gifts, LLC. It took us some time to grow but now we are becoming my dream - a self-sustaining business that values all of its customers. I still spend hours each week researching new and unique products to bring to our customers as well as testing new fragrances in our Hand Milled Soaps and Natural Candles. I am currently working on pillar candles, taper candles, guest soaps and a full color catalog print catalog that has all our products in it.

In the years that I have done research, craft shows, web sites, and other business related things, I have met (either in person or on the internet) many quality people. Quite a few of these people I owe a great thanks to for helping me learn some lessons the not so hard way. J I’ve also met my customers and have to say what a great group of people you are! I like the fact that you understand that though my products may be more than what you pay for in a store, Sunshine Sundries’ products are well worth the little bit extra. After all, you get what you pay for!
